How to apps in the Mac App store get updated?

I don't mean the little updates that fix little bugs I mean big next version updates. For example the version of iPhoto in the app store right now is from iLife 11 but if iLife 12 were to come out and the next version of iPhoto released the would I have to rebut the app in order to get the next version or would it just come as a regular update?
