Theories on what powers the universe?

Are there any philosophical or scientific theories on what exactly (as Steven Hawking put it) "breathes fire into the mathematics"? In other words, why everything functions the way it does in physics? What exactly it is that makes all particles/fields, etc. work, or powers them? Links/explanations of anything of the sort would be greatly appreciated. :3
